Garlon's explanation of why he did this: With 0.4 seconds left and down 2, he heard the opposing team's coach telling his player to miss the free throw, so the time would expire during the rebound instead of having the player make the free throw and freezing the clock and allowing Garlon's team to set up. Garlon thought it would be better if he dunked it in right away with still some tenths of a second left down 4 points, rather than down 2 and time expiring. Down 4 they would need a stupid foul on a made 3 pointer which is high unlikely but he thought this would still be better than time expiring during the rebound while down 2. But obviously his plan didn't work, as the clock expired during his putback.
